'Eclipse' DVD Countdown: Edward And Jacob Are The No. 5 Reason
If "Twilight" was all about introducing us to our love for Edward Cullen, and "New Moon"'s main purpose was to make us question whether we should instead be falling for Jacob Black, then "Eclipse" is here to let us know that, unlike Bella, we can have them both. And Summit Entertainment is making it easy for us by having "Edward Fast-Forward" and "Jacob Fast-Forward" features on the DVD that allow us to—you guessed it—fast-forward to our favorite Edward and Jacob scenes.
Our favorite Edward scene is definitely the sleepover. How could it not be? We could watch that make out session and the leg hitch on repeat for hours. I mean, Bella's face is kind of covered, so it makes it easier to pretend that we're the girl Edward is macking on. That meadow scene is a close second though, made all the more special by the fact that it's the first scene we were teased with so long ago.
Fortunately for all you Jacob lovers out there, Edward isn't the only one getting some quality Bella time. How could we forget that first kiss in La Push (and the intense confrontation afterward), or their last kiss up on the mountain? That's plenty to swoon over by itself. Yet, in proper werewolf fashion, Jacob is shirtless for a majority of this film, often with his fellow wolves half-naked surrounding him, which gets us swooning even more. We definitely have a soft spot for pretty boys.
I think most "Twilight" fans would agree, though, that one of the best scenes in "Eclipse" includes both Edward and Jacob, so it should make it to all of our jump-to lists. I'm of course referring to "the tent scene," also known as "the hottest night on the coldest mountain ever." That's a sexually tense moment I'm sure we're all grateful we'll have on DVD.

'Eclipse' Werewolves: Five Secrets Revealed
The Wolves Have New Fur, Eyes and Behavior
Weitz requested wolves that had more of a rangy look to them, with matted fur and eyes that more closely resembled human eyes than wolf ones. By contrast, Slade wanted his wolves just a bit more, well, coifed.
"They weren't supposed to look like poodles, but [Slade] wanted them a lot sleeker looking and with shinier, shimmering coats," Tippett explained.
Slade was also adamant that the "Eclipse" wolves revert to the wolf eyes you might see in nature. But it wasn't just the wolf pack's physical attributes that got a makeover for the third installment. Tippett and his team were also directed to adjust the wolves' overall behavior.
"The 'New Moon' wolves, we played them as heroic sentries," said Tippett. "When the wolves met the humans, we attempted to make it appear as though the wolves had a center of conscience that was definitely human. And David really wanted to play it that the wolves were far more primordial and much more wolflike. The wolves became less sentries sent from God and a lot more twitchy, uncertain, fairer animals."
Perhaps the biggest similarity between both films' wolves, however, is that neither set actually has genitals — a compromise necessary to secure a PG-13 rating. "We just deal with it by putting extra fur down there," he laughed.

Taylor's Wolf Is Sad
Tippett and his crew spent countless hours perfecting each member of the wolf pack, but obviously Taylor Lautner's wolf receives the most screen time and thus required the closest attention. Specifically, they had to capture Jacob's unrequited love for Bella while he was in wolf-form.
"Through non-language pantomime on the wolf's part, he had to appear to be engaged and try to make his expressions telegraph the tragic love that is their relationship," Tippett said. "So there is a sad kind of a longing and protectiveness that we try to imbue him with."
To get the look right, crew members traveled up to a wolf preserve, and actually got into pens with the 200-pound animals and sketched out what they observed.
"I'm a huge advocate of that. Anytime you can get close to an animal, that's the closet model you can find," he said. "And the animators are cast just like actors. Certain animators are really strong on action and there are animators that are really strong on the emotional moments. And the animators strong on emotion were the ones creating the emotional response of Jacob's wolf."
The Vampires Fought With a Potato
Since the wolves are entirely CGI creations, the actors are presented with a challenge: how to interact with — and often fight hand-to-paw against — imaginary beings. What's more, they had to do all this in such a way that would allow Tippett and his animators to plug in their digital creations. The solution they hit upon was what came to be known as the "potato."
"We came up with this object that we called the potato," Tippett said. "And the potato was roughly a very rudimentary wolf form that was kind of like a big pillow that matched the dimensions of the wolves without hair. And those would be set on location by the special-effects department, and they would rig these potatoes with wires so they would hang and we would be able to manipulate them in a way that we knew later on we would be able to match with the wolves in a realistic confrontation."
Taylor Dressed Up in a Gray Leotard
Alas, the potato wouldn't always suffice. For one scene in which Jacob's wolf nuzzles up against Bella, filmmakers required something just a bit more lifelike than a big pillow.
"David was very insistent that Taylor actually perform with Kristen, and so he had the wardrobe department make up a gray leotard and a hoodie that Taylor wore, and he would kind of crouch down and try as best he could to fit that space where we knew later the wolf would be," Tippett said. "And Taylor could remain in character and ensure that the performance was a performance based on contact between two performers, not just Kristen talking to a golf ball or something like that."
Fantasy Trumped Physics
In the climatic fight scene, when the wolves take on a newborn army of vicious vampires, the effects team found itself in a conundrum: How could a 1,200-pound wolf and a 180-pound vampire get into a realistic fight?
"We have to be true to Earth's specific gravity in the performance work to make it seem like the wolves are really there," Tippett said. "But if a 1,200-pound object is slamming into a human being at 30 miles an hour, it's going to have pretty severe consequences. And so there are these scenes where it's like, 'Oh my God, how are we going to pull this off?' "
Their solution was to sprinkle a hefty dose of magical realism into their physical calculations.
"David's justification for it was, 'OK, the newborns are made out of some material that increases their mass and that they are closer to 500 pounds," Tippett said. "The actors didn't actually play it like that — I don't think they ever told them that because they didn't start walking around like the Hulk or anything — but what it did is gave us an excuse to be able to choreograph these things. So when a wolf runs and attacks and slams into one of the newborns at the tail end of the third-act battle, we have a performance justification for how that works. That was actually planned out and made sense and didn't look stupid."

Will 'Eclipse' Make 'The Twilight Saga' A Horror Franchise?

So claims star Robert Pattinson, who told MTV over the weekend that this June's The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is different from the first two films in the vampire romance franchise. "It's like a horror film," said Pattinson, with a hint of surprise. And as FEARnet's resident Twilight expert, I'm inclined to agree. With more blood, more action, and more sinister threats closing in on Bella Swan's world, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse could very well be the series installment that earns the teen-friendly franchise its first official horror movie badge of honor.
Sure, Twilight had its villainous vampire showdown, seeding Bella and Edward's "getting to know you" love story with a handful of mysterious "animal attacks" in Forks that culminated in James hunting and attacking Bella. A bit less horror-ific was last year's sequel, New Moon, which spent most of its time on Bella's post-break up moping -- until she, Edward, and Alice found themselves in peril in the subterranean lair of the Volturi for the film's last-act face-off.

Many cite Eclipse as the darkest of the Twilight books, and with good reason. The vampire killings in Seattle set the tone from the start, creating a sense of fear and suggesting the frightening potential of a pack of evil vampires let loose in a world where most vampires, even the ones that eat humans, stay mostly under the radar. Tension mounts between the two supernatural families in Bella's life -- the Cullen clan and Jacob's Wolf Pack -- before the mortal enemies join forces for a massive battle in Bella's defense. An unknown vampire intruder breaks into Bella's bedroom, putting her safety even more into question. The threat of Victoria looms, and Bella fears that everyone she loves will be killed. And throughout it all, Bella begs to die and become a vampire herself, despite the pain and suffering she knows is a necessary part of the transformation.
And then there are the flashbacks. We learn why Rosalie's so bitter: she was gang raped and beaten and left for dead, and took bloody revenge on her attackers after being turned into a vampire. Jasper's back story is even more violent. A Confederate soldier, he joined an army of war-mongering Southern vampires and endured decades of vampire bites and injury in battle.
By the next sequel, Breaking Dawn, Bella will be resigned to her fate and we'll get another twist on the genre as Twilight dives headfirst into body horror. But Eclipse is where all hell breaks loose -- with the Volturi, Victoria's blood-crazed newborns, and Bella's complicated love life all threatening to bring her world to the brink of collapse. Here's hoping it's as scary on film as it was on paper.

Ashley Greene on 'Twilight: Eclipse' and Bullying Taylor Lautner

Ashley Greene is considered one of the sweetest stars of Twilight, both onscreen and off. But as she told FEARnet this week in Austin, you might see a tougher side of Alice Cullen emerge in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.
On a break from shooting the psychological thriller The Apparition and in town to promote her SXSW festival film Skateland, Greene revealed that she had watched scenes from the June 30 Twilight sequel Eclipse just days ago in a post-production session with director David Slade. And while she couldn't reveal specifics, she did describe her fight scenes as "down and dirty" and discussed her adversarial onscreen relationship with co-star Taylor Lautner. Check out what she had to say after the jump.
In comparison to both Twilight and The Twilight Saga: New Moon, fans don't really know much about what to expect in the film adaptation of the third novel – in that there were so many sneak peeks and trailers for the first two films, but not a whole lot for Eclipse.
Keep 'em wanting more!
Have you been given the chance to see any part of Eclipse yet?
I just did ADR a couple of days ago, actually, so I got to see some of the film. I was with [director] David Slade, and when I was doing ADR, I of course asked if I could see the whole scene played out so I could see something! It looks so good. I'm so excited.
You got to tear off a vampire's head in Twilight and face off with the Volturi in New Moon. What can you tell us about the things you get to do in Eclipse, which we know from the book will have more of a fighting element?
The thing I'll say about Twilight is, one, it's given me this Hollywood crash course and I've been able to work with three great directors. And also, my character is an incredible character to break out with because she's perky and happy and sweet, and she's this best friend character that everybody loves, so it's an amazing first character to have. Throughout the series you've gotten to see her go from really sweet to kind of sassy, and now in the third one we get to showcase this massive fight sequence that I'm a part of, so we got to get our action star fix. You get to see Alice get kind of down and dirty and see a really intense side of her that maybe you haven't seen before.
In New Moon your scenes with Taylor seemed to have more of a snap, perhaps because you'd gotten to know each other better after Twilight and could riff of each other more, and also because your characters would love to rip each other's head off in their scenes together. Do we get to see more of that banter and repartee with Taylor in Eclipse?
Those scenes are really fun to film! You know, they always say that the nicest people can play the meanest characters. I remember someone saying in an interview that Rachel McAdams was the sweetest girl, and she played this awful, mean character in Mean Girls. I think it's the same thing with Taylor. He's so sweet, I can look at him and be mean to him onscreen or have a fight with him and know that he's not going to take it personally, so we definitely got to play off each other a little bit.

'New Moon' Moviegoers Say 'Twilight Saga: Eclipse' Will Be 'Epic

Fans of Jacob and Bella are especially excited for the third film: 'They kiss in it!'
The stars of "Twilight" can't wait for fans to see the saga's third film, "Eclipse," and with more than six months until the film is released, Twilighters are already salivating to see what happens next for Bella, Jacob and Edward on the big screen.
"I didn't know if ['New Moon'] was going to be any good, where I feel like 'Eclipse' is going to be epic," Jordana de la Cruz gushed to MTV News after catching "New Moon" on opening night. "And they kiss in it, Jacob and Bella!"
It isn't just taking the love triangle to the next level that entices fans, but also the book's whirlwind ending.
"I've always been excited for 'Eclipse,' because that's my favorite book, but now that the whole cliffhanger is out there, definitely, I'd say a lot of people really want to see it," Habiba Tinubu said.
Twilighters agreed that with each film, the franchise keeps stepping up its game, so that means tons of excitement is also bubbling up for "Breaking Dawn," the final book in the series. "[I'm excited for] 'Breaking Dawn' because this movie also anticipates you for 'Breaking Dawn,' " another fan said. "When you get to the ending, you're like, 'Can't wait!' "

Video: Taylor Lautner says 'Eclipse' Is 'Going To Be Really Funny'
June 19, 2009
Twilight zone

Cue the hyperventilating, we have breaking Twilight news: "Rob's not pregnant!"
This with a laugh from Montreal actress Rachelle Lefevre, well aware of the absurdity -- and intensity -- of the rumours surrounding the vampire book-to-film franchise and its breakout star, Robert Pattinson, the angular heartthrob with the bed-head and British accent.
Lefevre, who plays vicious blood-sucker Victoria in the adaptations of Stephenie Meyer's bestsellers, is in Toronto shooting a movie opposite Kevin Spacey and prepping to present at Sunday's MuchMusic Video Awards.
But the topic of The Twilight Saga: New Moon is never far behind.
The Vancouver-shot sequel to last year's hit (worldwide gross: $382 million) opens Nov. 20, complicating the romance between star-crossed sex-abstainers vampire Edward Cullen (Pattinson) and mortal Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) with new characters (Frost/Nixon's Michael Sheen and Dakota Fanning are introduced as members of the Volturi, an ancient vampire coven), a love triangle (created by returning Taylor Lautner as werewolf Jacob) and converging enemies.
At the centre of the pop-culture tsunami are Stewart and Pattinson, magazine cover mainstays whose real-life rapport (romance or no romance?) at times eclipses their fictional one.
"They have fantastic chemistry together on-screen and you know that's the kind of thing that becomes the source of rumours," Lefevre says.
"People want them to be together. People would love to hear that -- that they fell in love on the set and so they read that into everything they see.
"But all I've seen are two people who have beautiful chemistry on-screen and are bonded.
"Kristen, before Twilight, already had a huge resume and had worked with some heavy-hitters, but she had also flown under the radar.
"And Rob, he was in Harry Potter (and the Goblet of Fire), so he had some experience with fame, but it was nothing remotely like this. So when two people go through that experience together -- the fandom and everything -- it's going to bond them."
How is Pattinson adjusting to life under the microscope?
"He's got a really good sense of humour. I've seen him frazzled, but when there were eight paparazzi chasing you and it's just you, it can be scary."
Almost as frightening perhaps as switching directors mid-stream between sequels.
Usually when a film succeeds, a studio clings to its creator.
But in the case of New Moon, Catherine Hardwicke is out, replaced by Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass).
"It could have been bad," Lefevre admits.
"But I think because Harry Potter went through it first to their benefit, we were like, 'The Potter kids went through a director shift and they were okay, so we'll be okay too.'
"And we were. Chris came in with such a clear idea of what the movie was. And he paid respect to what had come before -- so it was kind of seamless."
A third transition will happen later this year in Vancouver when another director, David Slade (30 Days of Night), takes the reins of the next sequel Eclipse.
"It's perfect timing for David because Eclipse is darker than the other two. There's more action.
"It's not a horror movie, but it is darker."
And just as the series evolves, so does Lefevre's role as Victoria seeks to avenge the death of her lover, James.
"In the first movie, because I didn't have as much screen time, I wanted to be very clear.
"I wanted to convey energy and be very present but also very playful. And that's because (Victoria) enjoyed stalking Bella with James.
NOT A GAME
"But when James is killed, it becomes about exacting revenge, which comes from a totally different place. It's not just a game anymore."
Also beefed up -- literally and figuratively -- is Lautner.
The 17-year-old actor, who played Jacob in Twilight, nearly lost the part because producers worried he was too young and skinny to embody the tougher, more mature Jacob of New Moon.
But Lautner "completely won that role," Lefevre says.
"The day Twilight wrapped, even before we knew there was going to be New Moon, Taylor started working out like an animal.
"He put on 30 pounds of muscle ... I saw some of his dailies and he has a presence that, if you were to watch Twilight and New Moon back to back, he looks like he's aged five years."

David Slade Talks 'Twilight: Eclipse'

Twilight: New Moon isn’t even in theatres yet, but we are already gearing up for the third film, Twilight: Eclipse. We crashed a David Slade signing at Dark Delicacies in Burbank, California, where he was signing a new line of toys based on 30 Days of Night. “One of the cool things about shooting a movie based on a book is that it is not a film the studio can really change,” he tells us. “Not that the studio would want to change anything, of course!” David promises that they will stick close to the book – there is no sense in changing the story at all.' Hit the jump for more.
What will differ about Slade’s Twilight? “I don’t really know. We haven’t even started shooting yet.” While the director says he has a basic idea of what he wants to do with it, he is more concerned with telling a good story than being “different.” “It is darker, and there is a lot more action than the previous two,” he admits. “The third book is from Bella’s point of view, but the film will be more objective.” And just how will he do that? “We are going to focus on the origin stories of several characters, like Jacob, and show how Bella will decide between Edward and Jacob.”
David didn’t read the books until the studio was interested in bringing him in – then he did his homework. “It was tough for a middle-aged man to get into,” he admits, “since they are written for 15-year-old girls. But once I got past that, I found them to be quite good books, and a great story.” He is especially excited about the great script from Dexter writer/producer Melissa Rosenberg. Right now, they are still in preproduction, with plans to start shooting later in the year.
When asked about his list of genre credits (including 30 Days of Night, Hard Candy, and mind-bending music videos for bands such as Aphex Twin, Stone Temple Pilots, and System of a Down), Slade admits to being a genre fan. “How many other chances do you get to create your own world from scratch?” He also tells us: “When I first got cable, I watched FEARnet constantly. I really loved Midnight Meat Train. I wanted to direct it – the studio sent me the script – but in the end I was a little too late.” While nothing post-Eclipse is written in blood, he is looking at a few other projects, all in the horror/fantasty/sci-fi genre.

The Twilight Scoop on the Casting Saga for Eclipse
